Nerd Alert: What major movie releases are still to come?

Okay, so you’ve seen: Iron Man 3 (terrific), The Great Gatsby (less than great), and Star Trek: Into Darkness (fantastrek!)

You have seen them, right?

Get caught up on your blockbusters because the next round of big movies is on its way.

May

Memorial Day weekend brings two potential hits with ‘The Hangover III’ and ‘Fast and Furious 6.’ This marks the first weekend so far where two major releases will battle head to head for box office superiority.

June

June will usher in three big movies with ‘After Earth’ starring Will Smith on June 7, ‘Man of Steel’ on June 14, and ‘World War Z’ with Brad Pitt on June 21.

July

‘The Lone Ranger’ starring Johnny Depp rides into theaters Independence Day weekend, followed by director Guillermo Del Toro’s “Kaiju” action film ‘Pacific Rim’ on July 12.

On July 26, Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan for director James Mangold (Walk the Line) in ‘The Wolverine.’

August

Early August is notable for the sequel that has no one really buzzing in ‘300: Rise of an Empire.’

 

Consensus

‘Man of Steel’ looks amazing. Director Zack Snyder has always turned out great looking movies. His shortcoming has been a lack of character depth. With producer Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception) and writer David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Blade Trilogy) on board that should no longer be an issue.

‘Man of Steel’ has released some of the most tantalizing trailers ever.

 

‘Pacific Rim’ is another must see. Director Guillermo Del Toro has such a dark, fantastical vision that I am highly interested to see what he does with an action film that boasts giant robots versus towering monsters. If you’re familiar with Del Toro’s work directing films as varied as ‘Pans Labyrinth’ and The ‘Hellboy’ movies, then you know he has a truly unique style to his films.

 

Although I think that ‘The Lone Ranger’ will be a better movie than it seems, ‘The Wolverine’ is the July pick.

Finally, audiences will get to see Logan in what looks to be a darker standalone feature that delves into Wolverine’s past and finds him questioning if the immortality he seems to possess is worth a lifetime of loss.
