Movie News Rewind for the week of June 17-21
This week brought us news on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and ‘Terminator 5,’ sequels for ‘The Avengers,’ shooting locations for ‘Star Wars: Episode VII,’ and the untimely passing of a beloved character actor and TV icon.
Our Movie News Rewind begins with the news on Wednesday June 19 that character actor James Gandolfini, known to milions of fans as ‘Tony Soprano’ from the HBO series ‘The Sopranos’ passed away at the age of 51 from a fatal episode of cardiac arrest.
Gandolfini will be missed by fans and the acting community itself, as his recent co-star on Broadway Jeff Daniels mourned, “I now miss him like a brother.” (Source: E! Online)

Gandolfini’s co-starring role in ‘Killing Them Softly’ with ‘World War Z’ star Brad Pitt is a fine showcase for the late actor’s distinctive talents.

After the announcement last week that Paramount Pictures had acquired the distribution rights to the ‘Terminator’ franchise, news broke Thursday June 20 that the next chapter in ‘The Terminator’ might include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. (Source: AICN)
Johnson’s movie career has followed a similar pathway as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has already confirmed that he’ll be back as the titular character that made him an action icon. Although no deal has yet been announced, Johnson’s recent success in ‘Fast and Furious 6’ would give ‘T5’ a bankable action star to compliment the legendary Schwarzenegger.
Johnson has moved seamlessly and successfully between multiple genres.Whether it’s action, family films, or comedies, all genres seem well-suited to his gifts and talent based on his box office success.
If you missed Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s turn as a thick-headed thug in ‘Pain and Gain,’ his comedic talent was a revelation to this reviewer and the best performance in the film.

Lastly, since no news item is too small for us ‘Star Wars’ nerds, Friday June 21 came with the announcement that ‘Episode VII’ will be partly filmed at Pinewood Studios.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy stated, “We’ve devoted serious time and attention to revisiting the origins of ‘Star Wars’ as inspiration for our process on the new movie.” (Source: Screen Daily)
