Christian Bale is not returning for ‘Justice League’ or any other film as ‘Batman.’
The actor, who rose to global film fame with director Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight Trilogy’ portraying Bruce Wayne/Batman, recently dispelled any remaining doubt as to his return in future movies as the iconic detective.
Rumors had persisted about Bale returning to the role and Christopher Nolan’s involvement with the ‘Justice League’ property and DC Comics. Nolan is not involved with ‘Justice League’ neither as a director nor as a producer.
Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros Pictures Group, confirmed reports that despite the presence of screenwriter David S. Goyer (who co-wrote the three recent ‘Batman’ films), Nolan is not involved in a ‘JL’ project. (Source: Total Film)
And ‘Batman’ himself has addressed the issue of his return, recently confirming that Bale is not returning for ‘Justice League’.
Bale stated, ”I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it.” (Source: EW)
Need more confirmation that Bale is not returning for ‘Justice League’ ?
(I know that we Flixnerds need messages delivered bluntly sometimes.)
Bale salted the ground atop any hopes of his reprising the role by adding, “It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.” (Source: EW)
Bale’s “passing the torch” is likely a natural decision for the actor, who was a surprise choice from director Christopher Nolan to many when originally cast for ‘Batman Begins.’ Bale has seemed to gravitate towards more challenging and dramatic material throughout his career.
From his Oscar-nominated role in ‘The Machinist’ to winning an Academy Award for ‘The Fighter’, Bale’s mega-successful role as ‘Batman’ is the anomalous commercial success on his resume.
While fans of the ‘Dark Knight Trilogy’ must accept that someone else will don the famous black cowl of the world’s most well-known detective, questions remain about ‘Justice League.’
Davis S. Goyer stated, regarding the involvement of Batman in a ‘Justice League’ movie that, “It would be a different Bruce Wayne from [Christopher Nolan’s] Dark Knight trilogy.” (Source: HeyYouGuys June 14)
Will we see Joseph Gordon Leavitt as a non-Bruce Wayne ‘Batman’?
That seems unlikely and sure to draw controversy from fans. I enjoyed JGL in ‘Looper’ and ‘TDKR’ but I don’t see him as ‘Batman.’ There has to be a strong physical presence.
And when, if ever, will someone greenlight this ‘Justice League’ movie?
Regular Flixnerd readers caught our article on Henry Cavill which found the new ‘Superman’ questioning the timeline for getting a ‘JL’ movie into theaters.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and comments, Flixnerds.
Now that Bale is not returning for ‘Justice League’, who should play Batman moving forward?
