Oscars to be hosted by Ellen

Oscar has announced his date for the big movie prom. Ellen DeGeneres will serve as the host of the 2014 Academy Awards.

DeGeneres is one of only two women to have hosted the Oscars solo, the other person being Whoopi Goldberg. Ellen last hosted the most important night in film in 2007.

The announcement on Friday, August 2, came from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences just one day after its newest President Cheryl Boone Issacs tenure begins.

In 2007, Ellen Degeneres’ first time hosting the Oscars, saw a ratings boost in the telecast from the previous year. Ellen Degeneres takes over from last year’s polarizing emcee, Seth MacFarlane. MacFarlane’s hosting duties proved to be a hit with the much-desired younger audience demographic for producers and advertisers. However, musical numbers including ‘We Saw Your Boobs’ had some critics crying foul and claiming that MacFarlane’s shtick was sexist and misogynistic. (Source: The Wrap)

Ellen Degeneres’ appeal to a large demographic and her style of humor should be less controversial for show producers. Ellen is known for an inclusive sense of humor and positivism that makes her a better host for the Oscars and its diverse audience.

I liked MacFarlane as host of the Oscars, but his darker and more cynical brand of humor were not a hit with everyone.

Actor and Activia pitch woman Jamie Lee Curtis echoed the sentiments of many female viewers in 2013, stating “I was offended last week. As an Academy member, as the child of former Academy members and as a woman, I expected more from the best that the movie business has to offer.” (Source: Huffington Post)

Academy Awards Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron commenting on Degeneres, “Few stars today have Ellen’s gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity.”

The 2014 Oscars (which recognize qualifying films from the previous year) will be held on Sunday, March 2 on ABC.
