Chris Carter, the creator of the cult television series ‘The X-Files’ is back. His new show, ‘The After’ has premiered on Amazon Prime and generating some ‘Nerdtastic buzz.
From 1993-2002 with the cult favorite ‘The X-Files,’ Carter delivered the supernatural weekly, as viewers tagged along for the paranormal investigations of FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson.)
Amazon Originals, taking a page from the success of Netflix, has produced an original TV pilot written and directed by Carter mysteriously entitled ‘The After.’
When an unnamed catastrophe strikes, eight complete strangers find themselves trapped in a parking garage without a means to escape. With cellular communications and the power grid down, our diverse group of protagonists must work together in order to piece together the puzzle of what has happened.
While the pilot episode of ‘The After’ has its promising moments, excellent production values, and an interesting premise…it’s the involvement of Chris Carter himself that makes ‘The After’ worth seeking out.
More congruent in tone with Carter’s other, criminally under-seen TV show ‘Millennium,’ Carter’s latest effort is worth a look and would be interesting to see how it develops story-wise if green-lit by Amazon Originals.
‘Millennium’ focused on retired profiler Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) and his involvement with a clandestine group which investigated crimes with a Biblically portentous bent.
If not for Carter’s track record of creating entertainingly original genre TV, I might be prone to dismiss ‘The After’ as a retread of some of Carter’s darker themes from ‘Millennium’ itself. There exist some parallels in both imagery and storyline. I’m hoping for a tie-in, as rehashing his own show would be disappointing to fans of his work so far.
‘The After’ is worth seeking out, and with Amazon Originals allowing viewers to vote upon which pilots become series…your voice can be heard.

I’m hoping that Sci-Fi and Carter fans vote ‘The After’ into a full season. There are some interesting ideas at play with a “supernaturally apocalyptic” first episode. We’ll just have to wait and see if Amazon Originals and Carter’s fans can generate enough buzz to make ‘The After’ Amazon’s first original TV show into a hit.
