‘Transformers:Age of Extinction’ has released a new trailer that features Mark Wahlberg saving humanity along with his Transformer allies.
To date, the ‘Transformers’ series may have served as proof that Summer blockbusters are little more than bombastic eye-candy, and empty movie-calories. With ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ the inclusion of star Mark Wahlberg seems to indicate that director Michael Bay is at least trying to appeal to a broader, more mature audience.
Michael Bay impressed with his smaller-scale crime caper black comedy ‘Pain and Gain’ last summer. For the Flixnerd review of ‘Pain and Gain’, click here.
Due in part to the Wahlberg performance in that film, I’m hopeful about what the next Bay-Wahlberg collaboration will add to this ‘Transformers’ franchise. ‘Pain and Gain’ showed that Bay still has a gift for blending action and comedy when he’s not busy focusing on merchandising tie-ins and lowering the intellectual bar to appeal to a wider audience.
With whiny, attention-starved Shia LeBouf out, this newest entry has improved already upon previous movies in the series.
‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ changing to Wahlberg as its lead plus what appears to be a slightly darker tone, may be exactly the “shot in the arm” that the franchise so desperately needs.
